We all love the Capricorn Queen Mary J. Blige. Her loyal fan base could rival the most devout New York Knickerbocker! Many of us live for her wildly popular singles, but I want to shine a light on a song that got me through a deep depression. On Mary’s album Growing Pains, there’s a gem on track 10 entitled “Fade Away.” I kept this song on repeat for 48 hours straight while locked in my dark room, mourning the death of a loved one, and essentially a part of myself. Invisibility would be great, she sang. I didn’t have the words for what I was going through but Mary, per usual, gave them to me right on time. My relationship with her music is so sacred because it is a gift that keeps on giving. I thank God for Mary’s contribution to Black girls and boys all over the world. She has offered us healing in transcendent ways. I am now in a better place in my life where invisibility is not an option, and I have Mary J. Blige to thank for that.
