A Real Love

In the monarchy of Hip Hop, there is only one QUEEN - Ms. Mary J. Blige. There are no words to adequately express the impact you have had on Black girls everywhere, but in homage to you, I’ll try.

For me, It feels as though you have always been here, as ubiquitous and permeable as air. I can remember being a little girl singing your songs, completely unaware of how I melded them to memory. Growing up, there weren’t too many artists that the whole family could rock to, but we could never go wrong with a Mary tape. I remember my first pair of thigh high boots, the first time I put on a big hoop, my commitment to fly shades after “Share My World” dropped, it was you that reminded us that these essentials can go a long way. We have all taken a note or four from the Blige house of style!

Thank you for timeless hits, consistent covers, always giving us young girls a run for our money, and for personifying beauty, grace and ghetto fabulousness for little Black girls from every hood. You are an indomitable force of perseverance and power. Not only have you given us the soundtrack to our lives, but a blueprint of womanhood. Ever evolving, always growing, always learning.

What you have blessed the world with, we can never repay. It is through your music, that we were able to take a better look at ourselves. Thank you for being that mirror. You are a cultural aurora. On behalf of ‘round-the-way girls everywhere, all that we can say...is THANK YOU.

Love, infinitely,

Veracity Savant
